Hello, My Friends!~~
I was thumbing through a stack of magazines from the mid-60's and found this ad from 1966 for 7-11...
Read the caption. Ok, now you're thinking "whaaattt?" Here's a close up in case you didn't believe your eyes...
What "Madmen" advertising genius thought this was a good way to promote 7-11? I guess this was before the Big Gulp or Slurpee and they were looking for some way to attract attention. But look at the kids...
At my count, there are 7 kids hanging in and out of the car. How hot is it in that car on that sunny day? Are there enough seat belts? I remember when I was a child that seatbelts were an option in cars and no one used them. It's a wonder we made it through the 60's. So back to this ad. I find it both hilarious and scary. More hilarious today because I think (I hope) that parents today use seatbelts for themselves and thier children AND they take their kids into the 7-11 and load them up on Slurpees in cups the size of their head and those gross-looking meat roll ups by the check out. I was that kind of Mom, and I have the stack of plastic Slurpee cups to prove ;) But we still use our seatbelts, promise.~~~XXOO, Beth

Beth...how did kids ever make it through? What a fantastic ad. I think we overdo it sometimes....my kids enjoy many treats but yes they always wear their seat belts.
Thanks for the laugh...Renee

That is hysterical!! My Mom had a jumpy seat for her car. It had springs, and they attached to each hook on the side of the door, and we could sit in it and jump all over the backseat. It's amazing that we didn't shoot out the windshield when she hit the brakes. Haha...we survived though. Thanks for making me laugh. xxoo Valarie

Amazing what was considered "ok" when we were growing up. Seat belts were always enforced (my parents own a funeral home and they saw first hand the importance of them before the law required them).
Great ad, Beth.

That is too great. I remember when I was 7 or 8 and my Mom would send me to the 7-Eleven to get her cigs. It was at the end of the street near a VERY busy intersection in the road. Ah, those were the days!

My parents had a playpen in the back of the car for us to sit in ....as if that was safer! I must admit I do like a Crystal Light icee on a hot summer day....but no children are left behind in my car

I often wonder how we 40-somethings ever survived our youths! My mother used to leave us alone out on the front lawn in our carriages "to get some sun." Insane!
